Get real-time protection to help prevent the growing number of ransomware attacks

By Cody Keeney

Earlier this month the Colonial Pipeline, a 5,500 mile pipeline that supplies upwards of 45% of the gasoline to the east coast of the United States was breached and halted due to a ransomware attack. With no recovery mechanism in place, the company was forced to pay nearly $5 million dollars to regain control of their infrastructure. The attack is a harsh reminder for many organizations of the growing threat of cyber-attacks and ransomware. Sadly, hacker groups such as “DarkSide” are only increasing in numbers and the threat of ransomware is only growing in complexity and scale.

While traditional backup solutions have been an infrastructure staple for a long time, they often rely on data that is several hours, days, or even weeks old. The resulting gaps in protection and inevitable data loss are both highly disruptive and costly. Relying on this old-school approach to data protection can cost a company a lot of money and put their reputation at risk.  Companies and their critical systems are being targeted at an alarming rate and are being forced to evaluate their approaches to data protection in order to stay ahead of the risk.

What is needed is a real-time solution that enables companies to recover their critical systems as quickly as possible to the precise point in time before they were compromised. The best solution will be one that leverages Continuous Data Protection (CDP) to provide real-time protection. The good news is that Disaster Recovery as a Service (DRaaS) providers such as Contegix are leading the charge in fighting back against these attacks.
